Somto Madueke is a Senior Analyst in our Cambridge office, specialising in Health Technology Assessment (HTA). He joined Costello Medical in 2021 as an Analyst.
Before joining Costello Medical, I earned my Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) from the University of Reading, graduating with several awards for academic excellence. Alongside my studies, I was passionate about supporting others–mentoring pharmacy students on their career prospects, leading the Catholic Society, and representing my peers as a Course Representative.
I also gained valuable hands-on experience through summer placements at AstraZeneca and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where I deepened my interest in the intersection between science and patient care. After graduating, I completed my pre-registration year at Vale Pharmacy and became a UK-registered pharmacist in September 2021.
One of the aspects I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to bridge my pharmacy background with economic evaluation of health technologies to support meaningful healthcare decisions. I particularly enjoy the cross-functional collaboration–both internally with colleagues and externally with clients–to develop and execute strategy, especially within the HTA space.
Applying my knowledge of healthcare systems and economic evaluation to diverse HTA submissions is incredibly rewarding, knowing that our work ultimately helps patients gain access to innovative and life-changing treatments. I also value the dynamic nature of the role, which allows me to work across a range of therapeutic areas and continually expand my expertise.
9:00am
I start my day by arriving at the Cambridge office and setting up at my desk. I begin the day by reviewing my inbox to flag any urgent or high-priority emails that need actioning. This helps me respond quickly to client needs and support junior team members where needed. I also take a few minutes to sort emails into folders and tidy my task list, ensuring nothing slips through the cracks and the day starts with clear priorities.
10:00am
A key part of my morning involves strategic meetings with project teams to review the status of our ongoing HTA submissions–typically, I’m working on around three at any given time–ensuring we’re on track to meet both our quality standards and deadlines. I provide guidance on the project plan, adjust timelines if needed, and help allocate team members’ time based on upcoming demands.
11:30am
I attend weekly or fortnightly calls with clients, where I offer strategic advice and provide updates on the progress of their HTA submissions. These conversations are key for aligning on next steps, anticipating future needs, and identifying opportunities to offer additional support. Building and maintaining strong client relationships is a core part of my role and essential to delivering impactful outcomes.
12:30pm
Lunchtime is a chance to connect with colleagues from other departments, discussing potential collaborations and gaining insights into the broader services Costello Medical offers. This cross-department knowledge exchange is invaluable for personal and professional development.
1:30pm
The afternoon is dedicated to reviewing and providing feedback on project deliverables from junior Analysts. My role in quality control ensures that all submissions meet our high standards before they reach the client. It’s also an opportunity to mentor junior colleagues–something I really enjoy–offering feedback that helps them grow in both technical and communication skills.
3:00pm
I often support business development activities alongside project work. This could involve scoping new project opportunities, drafting proposals, or reviewing budgets in response to client requests. I work closely with senior colleagues to ensure our proposed approach is scientifically rigorous, strategically sound, and aligned with the client’s goals. These moments are also a chance to strengthen relationships with existing clients and shape how we can best support their future HTA submissions and broader market access strategy.
5:00pm
As the day winds down, I take time to align with project leads on upcoming deliverables and prepare for the next day’s priorities. It is also a moment to reflect on the strategic direction of our work, ensuring each project continues to deliver value for our clients.
